ARTS VOLUNTEERING - SUPPORTING LOCAL ARTS

The Arts Society of Saltaire has, for several years now, given a small annual grant, currently £250, to the NORTHERN BALLET COMPANY.

The Academy is based in Leeds at Northern Ballet and provides high quality dance training for children. It is the only UK Centre for Advanced Training in classical ballet for talented 10–16 year-olds who attend dance classes after school on weekdays and all day on Saturday.

The Academy holds workshops in local Primary Schools to spot talent and our funding helps in supporting children where their family cannot cover travel costs and dance shoes.

Members from our Society enjoy regular visits to observe the dance classes and meet the young dance students. Sheila Bielby, a former committee member, is our liaison with the  Academy

This year, 2025, we will be awarding our first grant to KOESTLER ARTS (koestlerarts.org.uk)

Koestler Arts is the UK’s leading prison arts charity. Its aim is to encourage people in the criminal justice system, including young offenders, secure patients and immigration detainees, to lead more positive lives by motivating them to participate and achieve in 50+ categories in the arts.

They make this happen through:

  • Participation: to motivate and support people in custody and on community sentences, including probation, to participate in the arts, ensuring that the educational, social and well-being benefits of the arts are accessible to all.
  • Showcasing: to share this creativity with communities across the UK through innovative public programmes, enabling everyone to experience this powerful work and these hidden stories of change.
